Though the corkscrew comes with a "guarantee" for craftsmanship, it turns out they don't honor it. We spent $150 on a chateau laguiole corkscrew from a local wine merchant. We enjoyed it for 4 years of normal in-home use (about 2 times/week), one day recently the corkscrew just broke off while opening a wine bottle. We contacted the merchant and it turns out they stopped carrying this brand for the same reason - customers were returning them broken and the company did not honor any "guarantee". We expected a lot more for the $$ and reputation of the company.

I was the proud owner of a pricy Laguiole corkscrew with a bone handle for about five years. I was quite happy with it and had thought I would one day hand it down to my son who has a love of gadgets and of family memorabilia. I used it roughly three times a week - until about three months ago the screw broke off the handle under normal usage. I have tried to contact the manufacturer both in the US and in France and have received no response whatsoever. In the meanwhile, the old stainless steel corkscrew I purchased about 15 years ago - and which gets a great deal more abuse at parties and picnics - continues to function perfectly.I won't buy another - not worth the money.

We had the same experience as the other reviewers.... one day after about 3 years of ownership, the pin holding the corkscrew to the main handle just broke. It's just a small, metal pin held between 2 thin pieces of metal, so it absolutely cannot be put back in place securely. It's disappointing that it broke since they aren't cheap and it was a wedding gift, but I guess it's like everything that seems to be manufactured nowadays... it's disposable. The knife that's used to cut the foil on a bottle of wine was no sharper than a Gerber infant's knife either, so it's probably one of the most overpriced wine bottle openers on the market.
